Hindu Wedding Ceremony

As I said before, my family is wonderfully diverse. This is a photo of my cousin, Michelle, getting married to Enrique during their Hindu wedding ceremony recently. There was a Catholic wedding ceremony the following day as Enrique is of Philipino descent. The rich colour and detail of Indian wedding costumes can be seen here. Please View Large on Black By Clicking on 'Slideshow' in my Photostream

Most of us in my generation did not get married in this way, so it was a real treat for all in attendance. This ceremony is thousands of years old and is conducted in the ancient language of Sanskrit. At its core, a Hindu wedding ceremony is essentially a Vedic ritual, in which the Aryan deities are invoked in the Indo-Aryan style.

The primary ‘witness’ of a Hindu marriage is the eternal fire (agni is Sanskrit for "fire", or in Latin ignis, which is the root of English ignite, Russian ogon, Polish ogień, Lithuanian - ugnis - all with the meaning 'fire'). Seven encirclements are made around the fire by the bride and the groom in which she leads him seven times and then he leads her seven times. With every round they make one promise to their partner. In this way they make seven promises.

In the first round, the couple prays to God for plenty of nourishing and pure food. They pray to God to let them walk together so that they will get food.

In the second round, the couple prays to God for a healthy and prosperous life. They ask for the physical, spiritual and mental health from God.

In the third, the couple prays to God for wealth. They ask God for the strength for both of them so that they can share the happiness and pain together. Also, they pray so that they can walk together to get wealth.

In the fourth round, the couple prays to God for the increase in love and respect for each other and their respective families.

The bride and groom together pray for the beautiful, heroic and noble children from God in the fifth step.

In the sixth holy round around the fire, the couple asks for the peaceful long life with each other.

In the final seventh round, the couple prays to God for companionship, togetherness, loyalty and understanding between themselves. They ask God to make them friends and give them the maturity to carry out their friendship for a lifetime. The husband says to his new wife that now they have become friends after the Seven Vows and they will not break their friendship in life. As representatives of the masculine and feminine aspects of God, nature, and the universe, men and women are regarded as equals. Neither is superior nor inferior to the other.

The history of the Mallu Nairs

To understand the origin of the Mallu Nairs, we first have to understand the history of the Tamilians, the neighbours of the mallus.
Long Long Ago, only Brahmins lived in TamilNadu. They are nowadays popularly known as Tambrahms. When the English first landed on the shores of Tamil Nadu, much before they had explored other continents, they were surprised to see people who spoke a strange language , wore strange clothes , even had strange markings on their forehead and other parts of the body. So, when they enquired around (in English of course), there were few who ran away and there were few who answered "Naan Brahmin" and then ran away fearing that the English would spoil their orthodox holiness. "Naan Brahmin" in Tamil means "I am a brahmin". The English were not expected to understand this and classified this group of people as non-Brahmins. Thus, Non-Brahmins came into being and the English exploited this to create the caste system in India. In fact, all south Indians were only vegetarians at that time. A similar misunderstanding led to few people being understood as non-vegetarians and thus forced to eat meat.
Now, Brahmins consisted only of Iyers in the olden days. But, there were two "different" classes of iyers. One, who worked for daily wages and the other, who had their own businesses. The second category prospered over the years and eventually made enough money to buy and import cars from England. This group wanted to differentiate itself from the daily wage group. So, whenever they had to introduce themselves, they always said "Iyer with car".Over the next 132 years, this phrase "Iyer with car" slowly evolved to "Iyengar". Thus started the quest for dominance between the Iyers and the Iyengars.Since the Iyengars had cars, they slowly moved towards the eastern part of Tamil Nadu near the coast, where they made broad roads like the modern ECR, while the Iyers moved onto the hills close to the borders of Kerala.
Now back to Mallu nairs. When the British reached Kerala and started moving inwards towards the Tamil nadu Border, they were shocked to see two similar group of people at war with each other. Both were dark, spoke unintelligible language (they learnt later that both the languages were different) and yet, were fighting each other for control of the coconuts. So, the British started enquiring. Of course, the locals didn't know English, but were proud of their own culture and identity. Since the British (through Knowledge Transfer) from their counterparts who landed in Tamil nadu, already knew about Iyers, they assumed that all dark people in this people were Iyers. So, they started addressing even the Mallus as Iyers. This enraged the mallus a lot and they started adding "Not an Iyer" at the end of their names like Harish "Not an Iyer", Anil "Not an Iyer". Because of the accent of the Mallus and the evolving of language over time, the surname "Not an Iyer" stuck to the mallus and it eventually transformed to Nair. Thus, we have harish Nair and Anil Nair.
All you Nairs, be proud of your history and be proud of the fact that you are "not an Iyer".

Wedding (next to the ocean) by originalmulli (naomi).
Goodness, this wedding really got to me! I'm crazily over-emotional at other people's weddings at the best of times but this one I'm not even over yet!! The bride is from the US and it brought back all my own emotions about my baby sister, who is married to an American, living over there, and basically gone from me forever.

We took their couple photos at a fabulous stone circle up on the clifftop overlooking the ocean, rather apt perhaps as she has crossed that very ocean to be with him.

Autumn Wedding Dresses and Gowns

Fall Wedding Gown. The most important criterion for selecting a gown is your personal style. If you fall in love with a gown covered with beadwork and fancy detailing, that’s probably the gown for you. On the other hand, if you are the type of person who feels that less is more, go with your instincts. You want your guests to marvel at how incredibly beautiful you look, not think "Who IS that anyway, and where is the person we know?"

The fabric you select or whether you choose long or short sleeves, a chapel or cathedral train, etc. will be incidental to the overall design of the gown. There are so many styles available right now, from the very simple A-line tank-style bodice with little or no beadwork, to the full ball gown with illusion sleeves and windowed train, that you should be able to choose one that suits you perfectly. Here are some factors to consider when selecting your perfect gown:

Will your wedding be formal or semi-formal; contemporary or traditional?
It's your wedding and you get to choose the style and all the features it will have. Although it's generally acceptable anymore to wear a formal gown even for a semi-formal ceremony in a less than traditional site, it's harder to go to the opposite end of the spectrum and wear a semi-formal gown in a formal setting. Your wedding date will also be an important factor in choosing a gown, not only because gown styles and fabrics need to be appropriate to the season, but because it will determine how much time you have to select a gown and get fitted.

Time of day the wedding will be held.
An evening church wedding is usually considered the most formal, so you can choose a gown as fancy and sparkly
as you wish with a full royal or cathedral length train. A morning or afternoon garden wedding falls at the opposite end of the formality spectrum. For that setting a tea-length gown or a full-length gown with no train would be more appropriate. Remember though, it's your wedding and if you want to wear a formal gown for your garden wedding, go right ahead--some very beautiful photographs have been taken of formal gowns in garden settings!

White or off-white?
There are so many shades of both white and off-white these days, it can be confusing. True ivory, which is a fairly yellow version of off-white, is rarely seen these days. It has been replaced by candlelight or champagne, which are both closer to white than to ivory. These colors can be worn by brides with most skin tones, except olive skin. Brides who are pale or fair-skinned may actually find they look better in the candlelight tones, since white has a tendency to wash them out. Silks are nearly always a candlelight color, as it is the natural color of the fiber, and is not often bleached.

There are many shades of white as well, primarily depending on the type of fabric and its reflective qualities. Satin, which has a glossy, shiny finish will appear whiter than a taffeta or matte satin, which are not as shiny and reflect less light.

When should I buy my gown?
Autumn Wedding Dress.Autumn Wedding Dress. It's generally a good idea to begin looking for a dress at least 6 months ahead of time. However, many brides simply don't have that much time to plan. At Here We Go Again, we've sold gowns to brides anywhere from 1 day to 24 months ahead of their wedding dates. We promise not to roll our eyes if you say you're getting married in 3 weeks and still don't have a gown. Because we sell almost all our gowns "off the rack," we're here to help brides with short timelines as well as those who have the luxury of time.

After you've chosen a gown, decide how you will wear your hair and choose your headpiece. You may wish to work with your hair stylist to experiment a bit.

Wedding Gown Budget

Bridal gowns can range in price from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Therefore, it is important to remember your budget and purchase a gown that is within your price range. Your gown allowance should be about 5 to 6 percent of your total wedding. But don't spend all your allotted money on the gown itself. Make sure to save money for alterations and accessories including the headpiece/veil, jewelry, stockings and shoes.

Emergency Bridal Gown Care The Day of the Wedding

Would you believe--true story--the cat may decide your gown is the only place for her kittens? More likely, on your
wedding day someone’s kiss or a greasy car door or even a glass of red wine will soil your gown. There is a kit on the market containing chemicals and sewing supplies for emergency gown care,
but in a pinch baking soda, talcum powder, or even the “white-out” used in offices will do. You can also dab spills with clear water or club soda,
which actually does contain an enzyme that makes it slightly more effective than plain water. Caution: even clear water can leave a permanent stain on
such water sensitive fabrics as English satin, matte silk satin, or silk organza.

Madrid Bridal Show

I’m less in love today than I was yesterday with Madrid’s wedding fashion shows. Model Lily Collins - also doesn’t quite enthrall me as Bar Refaeli did. But, when all is said and done, Spain’s bridal getups are Godiva next America’s Hershey’s … both cravable, but one slightly more innovative.

Wed Like a Disney Princess

wedding dressIf you’re getting married, and think (or know) thatbelle_bridal.jpg you are truly a princess, then you must have a look created by couture bridal, suit, and gown designer Kirstie Kelly.

But wait, don’t settle for her regular - albeit gorgeous - drapery. If you are a true princess, then you and your entire bridal party simply must be dressed in inspirations from Disney’s princesses.

The Kirstie Kelly for Disney Fairy Tale Weddings collections feature five to seven bridal gowns per princess including Ariel, Sleeping Beauty, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, and Snow White.

Though the Disney theme may spark a childhood fantasy, the dresses are still elegant, and suitable for any age bride. The line is like any other bridal couture fashion in that you will find a range of fabrics, necklines, cuts, shades of white, and details - such as beading, lace, appliques, and pleats.
wedding party
The princess gowns have already seen a huge success since their initial debut in April. Now, the additional offerings for accessories, maids-of-honor dresses, and flower girl dresses have propelled Kelly’s and Disney’s success even further.

Blossoms - the collection for young girls in the bridal party - has an inaugural release of 12 designs.
The Maidens Collection allows the accessories_landing.jpgprincess bride to select from three to five tailored-to-match bride’s maids designs. Coordinating jewelry and veils can be matched from the Jewels line.

The dresses shown on this page are from Belle’s collection, connected to the princess with this quote: “The Heart, Like a Rose, Blossoms When Loved…” The third picture shows just a hint of the accessory options - tiara and all!

Heck, if I had a reason to wear it, I’d buy one of the Maiden dresses. No one says that you have to be in a wedding to enjoy these.

How I Got My Gown: New Jersey

full Wedding Insider: How I Got My Gown: New Jersey: Your party have beautiful with this wedding

Her Story: "I started looking for a dress more than a year before my wedding. I didn't expect to buy anything right away, but I wanted to get an idea of what I liked. I soon learned that I wanted a white strapless A-line gown with a sweetheart neckline and a beaded bodice. Out of the first 15 gowns I tried on, I only liked two of them, but I definitely didn't love either of them. As my wedding date approached, I made an appointment at Kleinfeld. My hour-and-a-half-long appointment made me nervous because I figured that I would need much more time, and I didn't want to rush. The bridal consultant began by asking me questions like, 'What time of day is your wedding? What is your venue like? What have you liked and not liked in gowns so far?' Then she showed me a handful of dresses. I tried them on and didn't like any. She fetched some more, which were more to my liking than the first bunch, but there still wasn't anything that was perfect. My hour and a half was up, and I was extremely frustrated. I was ready to give up and leave.

My consultant then took me to a back storage room where there were racks upon racks of dresses. She pointed me to two racks that fit my criteria and told me to pick out anything I liked. I found two dresses that could work. When I tried on the second one, a Stephen Yearick gown, and walked outside to see myself in the big mirror, I knew it was 'the one.' I'm typically drawn to plainer styles, but this dress was completely beaded. It was nearly the opposite of what I had pictured myself wearing on my wedding day, but I felt amazing in it! My mom, who had accompanied me to the appointment, was thrilled because she loved it too, and we have totally different tastes. The only issue was that the neckline went straight across and I was set on a sweetheart. The store called the designer and confirmed that the neckline could be changed for me. Fifteen minutes later, I left Kleinfeld having bought my dress, veil, tiara and earrings!" —Meredith Bodgas

Complate wedding for your party

Crystal Spring Golf Course in Burlingame has breath taking view! There will be more coming. In the mean time, there’s one teaser photo for Sophia and Sidney. Congratulations!

Hy and I will be out of town this week to Atlanta, GA for a wedding shoot. I am tagging along as I need a get away and have some time to breath. I’ve never been to Atlanta, it will be my first time, so I am super excited.

Next month, Hy will be shooting an engagement session in Chicago.

There’s also an India trip and a Hawaii trip before the year end. I can’t wait to see all the photos coming out of those trips :P

BTW, I am so behind in blogging. I have so many amazing pending photos to show case for weddings in August and September. Since we’ve been doing this for 4 years, I always worried that Hy will run out of new ideas, but for each wedding, the photos only amazed me more. Same goes to those vendors we worked with in the wedding industry, I see their amazing work every time we work with them, and it only gets better wedding after wedding. I am so fortunate to be inspired by these artists around me! And needless to say, among these artists, there are great business brains behind the scene as well. I am really wowed by some of very creative business ideas coming out of the wedding industry. It’s fun being a small business owner, at the same time working in big corporate. The way business is operated in both environment are very different :) Maybe one day I will start another blog w/ topic in business/marketing/advertising!

More to come. Stay tuned~ Autumn is the season Hy and I enjoy the most. Hopefully we get to show case some nice fall color photos this year!
